The Process

 Hello there reader,

today's project was the top drawer in my bed side table.

I've taken some more photos to go through my process with you in a bit more detail.

This first picture shows the drawer as it was as I opened it.

I took that work sheet and journal off the top so you can see what was underneath...

Let me walk you through my thoughts and how I fixed this.

First I looked at my habits which have caused this disaster in the first place.

At night when I get into bed, I take out my hair and dump the clips, combs, bands and ribbons into this drawer. If I finish a book I tend to throw the bookmark in there too. The vaseline in the bottom right corner is an essential as I have a compulsion to moisten my lips with my tongue all day long and they dry out, so constant application of petroleum jelly helps to stop the compulsion and to replace moisture. I also do that several times as night, so this is where I can reach it in a sleepy state. I also moisturise my hands just before I go to sleep, and there are several half finished tubes thrown in there. Also in there are some eye masks which I grab some mornings if I want to sleep in or if I want the window open and the neighbours have outside lights on.

All of those habits will not change, I don't want to change them, so I have to reorganise to make it work.

I bought a few supplies. I haven't done this with any other project, just used what I had around the house, but I knew this would require some smallish boxes to contain those little hair items and I didn't have any spare ones.

Also in this photo are some items I am putting into the top drawer to make a comfort box which is suggested in Simple Abundance. I've go some tubes of lollies, some Maltesers, some tea light candles and a 'relax' oil for my diffuser or oil burner.

Time to take everything out and put it on the floor (or table, wherever you are working)

The bottom of the drawer is damaged from the vaseline (petroleum jelly) usage. I will put a drawer liner over that, but I clean it out first.

Then I sort into piles. what is going back in, what will be relocated and what will be thrown out.

This is the rubbish pile, it went straight into the bin.

This is the relocate pile. Some of it went into the drawer underneath. Other things went to other areas of the house. I want to make it clear I did not put anything in this pile into an area I have already cleaned unless it fit, or that was it's original location. The last thing I want to do is undo any work I've already done. So far I've managed to maintain all the areas that I've cleared over the last 5 days.

And this is the end result. I've added a tray that wasn't in the supplies photo as I found the large hair items wouldn't fit into the smaller boxes I'd bought.

Everything in the drawer now has a little compartment for me to drop it into at night.
I will write again later to see how this reorganisation works and if it needs adjusting.

Don't forget you can share your own progress in my facebook group.

  1. These are obviously things you’re grateful. By making a place for them, you are indeed showing your items and the space respect. Thank you for setting a much needed example.
